Dr. Tayyab Safdar

Dr. Tayyab Safdar is a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Centre of Development Studies. His research investigates the effects of increasing Chinese investment in infrastructure projects on economic development in countries located along the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The research will be based on an in-depth analysis of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) which is often referred to as the pilot project for the Belt and Road Initiative and has vital importance for developing countries. Tayyab joins the Centre of Development Studies from the Department of International Development, London School of Economics where he was an LSE Fellow.

Dr. Tayyab completed his PhD and MPhil in Development Studies from the University of Cambridge. His PhD research looked at the differential impact of globalisation on agro-industrial value chains in developing countries. The thesis brought to the fore a distinction between two ideal-type ends of a continuum from the ‘archetypal’ to the ‘ossified’ value chain. The research was based on a comparative analysis of the sugarcane value chain in Brazil and Punjab, Pakistan.
